Morocco Prepares for Round of 16 After Loss to Mexico in U20 World Cup

Rabat: Morocco’s U20 national team is gearing up for the Round of 16 in the U20 World Cup, despite a recent defeat to Mexico. The team’s head coach expressed satisfaction with Morocco’s position, emphasizing their aim to represent the country well in all scenarios, whether during high-pressure matches or in situations where advancement is already secured. The match against Mexico, which concluded with Morocco’s loss, had no impact on their progression, as the team had already qualified for the next stage.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the coach acknowledged Mexico’s deserving victory, stating that Morocco attempted to succeed in the match but ultimately fell short. The coach noted that the decision to play new players was not indicative of a lack of desire to win, but rather a strategic choice. He attributed Mexico’s success to their ability to capitalize on small details, second balls, and duels.

The coach also commented on the officiating, expressing his opinion that Mexican players should have been issued two yellow cards in the first half. Additionally, he voiced frustration over a yellow card given to Moroccan player Ali Maamar and the limited stoppage time added. However, he clarified that these factors were not the reasons for Morocco’s defeat.

Despite the loss, the coach viewed it as a valuable learning experience, bringing the team back to reality and preparing them for future challenges. Morocco concluded the group stage at the top of their group with 6 points, following earlier victories against Spain and Brazil. Mexico finished with 5 points, while Spain and Brazil ended with 4 and 1 point respectively. In another group match, Spain defeated Brazil 1-0.
