Morocco’s Family Code Reform Highlights Societal Changes

Rabat: The Family Code reform process initiated under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI is considered ‘highly strategic’, reflecting the evolving social, economic, and cultural dynamics of Moroccan society, stated Myriem Noussairi, Chief at UN Women.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the reform process underscores the changing dynamics of Moroccan families and the necessity to align legal frameworks and policies with the new reality of women’s significant roles in both public and private spheres. This initiative is seen as crucial not only for Morocco but also for other Arab states.

Myriem Noussairi emphasized the reform’s importance in strengthening women’s rights and promoting gender equality. She noted that the approach adopted focuses on the “best interest” of the child and emphasizes ‘shared and balanced’ family responsibilities. The consultative process ensures active involvement from civil society, including women’s rights groups, demonstrating a commitment to creating an inclusiv
e and participatory framework at the highest level.

The inclusive approach aims to secure broad societal support for the reforms, paving the way for lasting change. UN Women supports these efforts, viewing them as positive steps toward a more equitable society.
