Casablanca: The United States has inaugurated a new Consulate General in Casablanca Finance City, marking a significant enhancement to its diplomatic presence in Morocco. This development means that Morocco now hosts both the oldest and newest U.S. diplomatic missions worldwide, as highlighted by the State Department.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the inauguration of the consulate underscores the long-standing relationship between the United States and Morocco, as they approach the milestone of 250 years of friendship. The American Legation in Tangier, established in 1821 and gifted by Sultan Moulay Slimane, represents the oldest U.S. diplomatic post globally and remains the only U.S. national historic landmark located outside the United States. Today, it functions as a museum and a center for research and cultural activities.
The new consulate, situated on a 6.9-acre site in Casablanca’s Casa Anfa financial district, aims to reinforce diplomatic ties and promote cooperation in areas such as economic growth, security, and regional stability. The facility is designed to provide a secure and modern environment for U.S. diplomacy, integrating elements of Moroccan architectural tradition with advanced building systems to ensure enhanced performance and durability.
A significant aspect of the consulate is the display of contemporary artwork from both the United States and Morocco, curated by the Office of Art in Embassies. This artistic integration highlights the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several prominent officials, including Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan III, and U.S. Consul General in Casablanca Marissa Scott.
