Niger’s FM Calls Morocco ‘Essential Partner’ for Sahel Countries


Casablanca: Morocco is described as an ‘essential partner’ for Sahel countries, including the Confederation of Sahel States, as stated by Niger’s Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré during a meeting in Casablanca. The meeting, focused on ‘Prospects for West Africa: The New Confederation of Sahel States’, was organized as part of the Crans Montana Forum. The head of Niger’s diplomacy applauded the initiative by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to enhance access to the Atlantic Ocean for Sahel countries, highlighting its significance for the region’s landlocked nations.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Foreign Minister Sangaré expressed that Morocco has provided an opportunity for Sahel countries to access the sea and engage more effectively in the global market. He emphasized Morocco’s support in other critical areas for the countries within the Confederation.

In agreement, Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdoulaye Diop praised Morocco’s ‘constructive and respectful character’ in its relationships wi
th African partners, citing the Royal Atlantic Initiative as a prime example. He noted that the initiative aligns with projects aimed at industrialization and economic transformation in the region, emphasizing the need for cooperation with regional and international partners to promote sustainable development in the Sahel.

Diop highlighted that structuring programs in logistics, infrastructure, technology, and finance are crucial for creating platforms that connect Sahel countries to both the regional and global economies.

The Crans Montana Forum 2025 commenced on Friday with the theme ‘Africa’s International Trade: Maritime Safety and Security of Ports and Waterways.’ The two-day event marks the beginning of a series of high-level forums scheduled in Morocco as part of the Global Crans Montana Forum.
