Rabat – The Symposium commemorating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the 1st elected Parliament in Morocco kicked off on Wednesday in Rabat.

The opening session of the symposium was marked by a message addressed by His Majesty the King to the participants, read out by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi El Alami.

At this major event, participants will focus on two main themes: “The constitutional evolution of the structure and functions of parliament” and “The pillars, challenges and prospects of parliamentary action”.

The first session will be devoted to the Moroccan bicameral system and the relationship between the legislative and executive powers, as well as the evaluation of public policies, while the second session will focus on the relationship between parliament and democratic practice, the “open parliament” and the challenges of parliamentary action.

In parallel with the Symposium, the Parliament with its two houses organizes an exhibition of photos and documents in
partnership with the Moroccan Archives.

This exhibition recounts the milestones of parliamentary action that have accompanied Morocco’s institutional, democratic and societal development, “from the creation of the National Consultative Council in 1956, as the nucleus of this legislative institution, on the initiative of the late HM Mohammed V, through the promulgation of the country’s first Fundamental Law, to the holding of elections that gave rise to the first bicameral Parliament, composed of the House of Representatives and the House of Advisors in 1963, under the reign of the late HM Hassan II, and the introduction of far-reaching reforms and comprehensive, multidimensional development, initiated under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him”.

On this occasion, a tribute will be paid to former MPs Badia Skalli and Latifa Bennani Smires, the first two women to sit in the Moroccan Parliament in the 90s.

A complaint filed by the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) against Jawher Ben Mbarek has been referred to the Tunis Court of First Instance, defence lawyers for the defendants in the conspiracy against state security case said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

The case of Ben Mbarek, who has been under arrest for months in the case of conspiracy against state security, has been referred to the court by the public prosecutor in the above court for comments he made on television, they added.

He will be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of Decree 54 of 2022 on combating crimes related to information and communication systems.

The defence lawyers also said that the Tunis Court of First Instance had closed the investigation in the case of the complaint filed by the Minister of Justice against politician and lawyer Ghazi Chaouachi.

The judge decided to refer Chaouachi to the Indictment Chamber of the Tunis Court of Appeal under Decree No. 2022-54, according to the same statement.

CAIRO: Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Mohannad Aklouk, said that the State of Palestine has requested an extraordinary meeting of the Arab League at the level of permanent representatives to discuss the continuation of the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people for the past one hundred and three days.

He said that the requested meeting is expected to highlight Israel’s escalation of crimes in the occupied West Bank, including its systematic destruction of the infrastructure of Palestinian refugee camps, daily incursions, the killing and wounding of hundreds of civilians, the demolition of homes and the detention of thousands of Palestinians in inhumane conditions.

The meeting will also discuss Israel’s unprecedented Judaization policies in the city of Jerusalem.

Palestine requested the meeting early next week to also discuss Israel’s ongoing aggression on Gaza, which led to the forced displacement of around two million people of its population and a high civi
lian death toll.

He expressed hope that the meeting would result in political, legal, diplomatic and economic actions to confront the Israeli crimes, which can be done or supported within the League of Arab States and its member states.
