Rabat: The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed his thanks to Morocco and France for organizing and co-chairing the second Ministerial Conference on Peacekeeping in the Francophone Environment, held on Wednesday in Rabat.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, during the conference’s opening session, Guterres remarked in a pre-recorded speech that peacekeeping is one of the UN’s most tangible functions, especially at a time when global conflicts are at their peak since 1945. He highlighted that peacekeeping continues to be a robust and cost-effective tool for the international community, necessitating ongoing political commitment, adequate resources, and enduring partnerships.
The UN Secretary-General emphasized that effective peacekeeping depends on a clear mandate, political will, and steadfast support from Member States. In Francophone regions, particularly in Africa, understanding local languages, cultures, and dynamics is crucial for building trust and ensuring success
ful operations.
Guterres also mentioned the “UN80” Initiative, a reform effort aimed at optimizing UN peacekeeping operations to be more coherent and aligned with on-the-ground realities. He acknowledged the dedication of peacekeepers who have operated in perilous environments globally for decades, striving to protect civilians and support political processes.
The High-Level Segment of the conference, co-chaired by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, included participation from 26 ministers and 63 delegations representing countries worldwide.
