Rabat: The United States reaffirmed, on Wednesday, its ‘recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.’ ‘The United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara,’ said the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, during a press conference following his meeting in Rabat with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the American official also emphasized that efforts are underway in the framework of the most recent Security Council resolution, Resolution 2797, to bring a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict. Landau stressed that the situation cannot continue unresolved for another 50, 150, or 200 years.
During his talks with Bourita, Landau reiterated the continuous support of the U.S. for Morocco’s autonomy proposal, describing it as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the territorial dispute over the Sahara.
The U.S. Deputy Secretary of State also highlighted
the support of the United States for American companies wishing to invest and do business in the Sahara.
