Upgrading Health Sector Seen as Key to Socio-economic Growth: Govt. Head

Rabat: During a question time session, Akhannouch emphasized that reforming the health system is a testament to the government’s serious commitments and reflects its genuine political will to achieve structural change in this sector. He asserted that improving the health sector is a critical aspect of implementing HM King Mohammed VI’s vision for Morocco’s future and achieving the desired socio-economic development.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the government is conducting a radical and comprehensive reform of the healthcare system. This involves adopting a series of decisions and unprecedented measures that have significantly transformed the sector. Akhannouch recalled that the government enacted a framework law on the national healthcare system, which serves as the foundation for all reform measures aimed at establishing a modern and efficient healthcare sector.

The legislative framework is based on four main principles: establishing good governance with a strong regional focus, training and encouraging human resources, upgrading healthcare provision, and digitizing the sector. As a tangible expression of this ambitious vision, the government has mobilized significant funding for this overhaul. The budget for the sector has been significantly increased from MAD 19.7 billion in 2021 to MAD 32.6 billion in 2025, marking an increase of over 65% during the current government mandate.

Akhannouch also noted the success of extending medical coverage to all Moroccans on an equitable basis, a right that was previously limited primarily to civil servants and salaried workers. He concluded by stating that guaranteeing health security has become a strategic lever for the Executive, supporting the effort to generalize health coverage in line with the Royal High Directions and the established timetable.
