US Congressmen Advocate for Enhanced US-Morocco Relations, Stress Importance of Sahara Sovereignty

Rabat: Following talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, the congressmen highlighted the prospects for cooperation between Morocco and the United States.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Congressman Mike Lawler emphasized the U.S. support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and expressed optimism about future collaboration opportunities, particularly in the Sahara region. Lawler reiterated U.S. backing for the Autonomy Plan presented by Morocco in 2007, hoping that this recognition would attract more American investments in the southern provinces, further cementing the longstanding relations between both nations. He noted that Morocco was the first country to acknowledge the independence of the United States in 1777.

Lawler also conveyed appreciation for Morocco’s efforts under King Mohammed VI’s leadership towards regional and continental stability and peace, praising the historic U.S.-Morocco partnership, especially in security and economic development.

Congressman Ritchie Torres also commended the friendship and strategic partnership between the United States and Morocco. Torres expressed satisfaction with the reaffirmation of U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, a stance recently endorsed by President Donald Trump. He highlighted Morocco’s strategic position as a link to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, describing it as the U.S.’s greatest ally in North Africa.
