Rabat: Following the progress made in 2024 through the creation of three regional centers of excellence in Africa, West Asia and Central Asia, participants at the 4th International Meeting of Mining Ministers elected to entrust the management of the Sustainability Hub to the Institute of Geology and Sustainable Mining of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P).

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development efficiently contributed to this achievement through its constant support and its strategic vision to strengthen sustainable development in the mining sector.

This achievement is the fruit of joint efforts by the Ministry and the UM6P, thus contributing to making the latter an institution capable of playing a leading role in this initiative.

Under the terms of this decision, UM6P will be responsible, alongside two centers in Saudi Arabia and South Africa, for training young people to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the mining se
ctor through geological exploration and exploitation and the creation of a productive mining industry of the future, with little environmental impact.

UM6P is thus at the forefront of efforts to transform mining practices, with the Sustainable Development Center committed to promoting environmentally-friendly mining practices, social inclusion and economic viability.

By promoting the principles of circular economy, waste reduction, pollution control and site rehabilitation, the center will help set new standards for sustainable mining.

These centers will be supported, in line with the principles of knowledge-sharing and encouraging cross-border cooperation, by six other centers from Canada, the UK, Australia, Turkey, the U.S. and the University of Pennsylvania.
