Moroccan and Ecuadorian Foreign Ministers Forge Stronger Bilateral Ties

Quito: Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita held a working session in Quito with Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility Gabriela Sommerfeld. Bourita was accompanied by Morocco’s Ambassador to Colombia and Ecuador, Farida Loudaya. In a statement to the press, he noted that this marks the first visit by a Moroccan foreign minister to Ecuador since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1988, calling it a ‘historic moment for our bilateral relations’.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the visit signifies a new chapter in the relations between Morocco and Ecuador. Bourita highlighted this development, referencing President Noboa’s decision in October 2024 to suspend relations with the so-called +sadr+. He emphasized that following this decision, and under the guidance of His Majesty the King and President Noboa, a roadmap was signed to promote South-South ties between the two countries. This roadmap aims to foster collaboration between nations that, while geographically distant, share common interests.

Bourita detailed the areas of cooperation that have been developed, focusing on economic, agricultural, and human dimensions. This collaboration includes the granting of scholarships, which enhances educational and cultural exchanges between the two countries. On this occasion, Gabriela Sommerfeld announced Ecuador’s plans to open its first diplomatic representation in the Maghreb by establishing an embassy in Rabat.
