New york: The United Nations Secretary-General has renewed his call for dialogue between Morocco and Algeria, emphasizing the critical role that neighboring states, particularly Algeria, have in resolving the ongoing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. The Secretary-General’s remarks come in light of Morocco’s recent gestures aimed at fostering open dialogue with Algeria, as highlighted in the Throne Speech delivered by His Majesty King Mohammed VI on July 29, 2025. In the speech, King Mohammed VI expressed Morocco’s readiness to engage with Algiers in a spirit of frankness, responsibility, fraternity, and sincerity.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Secretary-General, Ant³nio Guterres, underscored the importance of Algeria’s involvement in achieving a solution to the dispute. He noted that such cooperation could also enhance both countries’ security and development opportunities. However, Guterres lamented the lack of “concrete improvement” in Algerian-Moroccan relations, despite various declarations of intent. He urged both nations to intensify their efforts towards regional cooperation, which he described as a vital prerequisite for enduring peace in the Maghreb region.
In line with these discussions, the Secretary-General acknowledged King Mohammed VI’s desire for a “consensual solution” that would not result in winners or losers, allowing all parties to save face. Furthermore, Morocco has reiterated its appeal to the Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, for the resumption of negotiations involving all concerned parties, including Algeria.
The call for renewed dialogue comes at a time when the UN and the international community are intensifying their efforts to revive the political process aimed at achieving a realistic, pragmatic, and lasting resolution to the Moroccan Sahara dispute, which is set to mark its 50th anniversary next month.
