Rabat: Morocco and Mauritania have initiated discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in decentralization and land-use planning, with a focus on enhancing ties between local authorities in both countries. The talks centered on developing a roadmap to promote collaboration in local governance, including public services, urban development, and land-use planning.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Moroccan delegation engaged in meetings with Mauritania’s Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Interior, focusing on Decentralization and Local Development. These discussions also involved regional representatives and mayors, underscoring the importance of local governance.
In a statement to MAP, Mbarka Bouaida, president of the “Association des R©gions”, highlighted the discussions as an opportunity to acknowledge the strong ties between Morocco and Mauritania under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI and HE President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani. Bouaida emphasized the role of decentralization in managing territorial affairs and the commitment of both parties to enhance cooperation in domestic economic growth, innovation, cultural exchanges, and quality training.
The discussions also explored ways for Mauritanian local authorities to access financial and technical support from the “African Support Fund for International Decentralized Cooperation of Local Authorities.” Bouaida praised this Moroccan initiative for its success among African local authorities, noting its contribution to sustainable and integrated development, with a focus on projects that directly impact local African populations.
