Fez: Morocco is set to play a central role in intra-African trade, stated Adam Elhiraika, Director of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Office, on Thursday in Fez, on the sidelines of the 5th edition of the Fez-Meknes Economic Forum. The Kingdom of Morocco holds the greatest potential to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), he told MAP following the ‘We Afri Can – Africa in Action: Creating Synergies for a Shared Future’ conference, held as part of the forum.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Elhiraika added that by consolidating its industrial capacities and strengthening trade with its African partners, Morocco is well-positioned to become a driver of the continent’s economic transformation.
“In recent years, the Kingdom has stood out for its sustained investments in infrastructure, particularly in the services and renewable energy sectors,” he continued, noting that Morocco has consistently demonstrated commitment to education development, strengthening networks, signing agreements, and launching initiatives aimed at more effectively connecting the Moroccan market with the rest of the continent.
He also noted that the African continent remains heavily dependent on imports of manufactured goods, which presents a strategic opportunity for any country capable of developing a competitive industry-especially the Kingdom of Morocco, which enjoys an efficient and rapidly growing manufacturing sector.
Held under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, the fifth edition of the Fez-Meknes Economic Forum features the participation of representatives from several African and European countries.
