Rabat: Morocco’s Foreign Ministry has made a significant move by appointing 22 new Consuls General as part of a strategic overhaul aimed at enhancing consular services. This initiative aligns with the High Royal Instructions to improve the quality and efficiency of Morocco’s diplomatic relations with its expatriates.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the shake-up affects 37% of Morocco’s 60 diplomatic missions abroad, reflecting both the scale and the diverse caliber of the newly appointed officials. This movement predominantly impacts countries hosting large Moroccan diaspora communities, with notable changes in France, Italy, Spain, and Belgium, as well as North America with a new appointment in New York.
The reorganization is not only notable for its geographic reach but also for its emphasis on gender parity. Of the 22 new appointments, 10 are women, increasing the share of female Consuls General to 38% across the consular network. This underscores the Ministry’s commitment to promoting equal opportunities and elevating female talent to leadership roles.
The appointments reflect a balanced approach between continuity and renewal. Eleven individuals have been appointed to the Consul General role for the first time, following years of service within the Ministry or diplomatic missions. Additionally, seven current Consuls General have been redeployed, and four individuals have been reappointed to positions they previously held.
Many appointees possess a dual background in diplomacy and consular affairs, aligning with the evolving mission of Moroccan consular offices. These roles now encompass responsibilities beyond traditional services, including citizen protection, economic diplomacy, and cultural cooperation.
This renewal initiative aims to equip Morocco’s consular network with skilled professionals capable of meeting the growing expectations of the Moroccan diaspora through effective, citizen-centered, and high-quality public service. It reinforces Morocco’s dedication to a people-centered diplomacy that remains connected to its citizens and responsive to global challenges.
