Rabat: The Republic of Panama, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, has declared its support for the autonomy initiative as ‘the most serious, credible and realistic basis for resolving the regional dispute’ over the Moroccan Sahara. This position was formalized in a Joint Communiqu© signed during discussions between Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, and Panama’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Javier Martnez-Acha V¡squez, who is visiting the Kingdom.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Panamanian minister conveyed during a press briefing that the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco in 2007 “should be the only solution for the future.” He emphasized Panama’s strong backing of the autonomy plan as a pathway to a lasting resolution of the dispute.
Panama’s endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy initiative follows its decision to cut ties with the so-called ‘sadr’ in November 2024. In the Joint Communiqu©, both the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Panama reiterated their dedication to upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
