Geneva: Paraguay has reiterated its steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. In a statement to the press following a meeting with Mohamed Ould Errachid, Speaker of Morocco’s House of Councillors, Paraguayan MP Jos© Latorre emphasized that Paraguay views the Sahara as an integral part of Morocco, confirming the country’s clear and unequivocal stance on this matter.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the meeting took place on the sidelines of the 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). During this encounter, Latorre, accompanied by a high-level parliamentary delegation, discussed the enduring friendship between Paraguay and Morocco and reaffirmed Paraguay’s firm position supporting Morocco’s territorial integrity.
On this occasion, the Speaker of the Paraguayan Parliament presented Ould Errachid with a resolution unanimously adopted by the Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies. This resolution acknowledges Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and endorses the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as the foundation for resolving the dispute.
Ould Errachid expressed appreciation for Paraguay’s consistent support for the Moroccan Sahara, referencing key milestones such as the withdrawal of recognition of the so-called “sadr” in January 2014 and the impending establishment of a Paraguayan consulate in Morocco’s Southern Provinces. He also praised the Paraguayan Parliament’s efforts, including several resolutions backing the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, most recently in November 2024, as a credible solution to the conflict.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to facilitate reciprocal parliamentary visits to enhance South-South cooperation within frameworks like MERCOSUR and the Morocco-Latin America Economic Forum. Attendees included members of the Bureau of the House of Councillors and other Moroccan officials.
