Agadir: “African Lion,” the largest multinational joint exercise on the African continent, reaffirms the shared commitment of the United States of America and the Kingdom of Morocco to regional security and stability, stated United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, assuring that there is “no” better partner to host these maneuvers.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Hegseth extended special thanks to Morocco for its consistent commitment to the exercise during a video conference at the South Zone General Staff headquarters in Agadir. He emphasized that African Lion enhances interoperability and capacity to address security challenges, while eliminating terrorist safe havens. Hegseth noted the rapid evolution of threats and the need for proactive innovation efforts.
Hegseth described African Lion as an innovation platform, exploring new solutions and technologies for battlefield effectiveness. He highlighted the upcoming “African Lion 2026” as an innovation laboratory incorporating artificial intel
ligence, robotics, and digital technologies in multi-domain operational scenarios.
The clear message of African Lion 2026, Hegseth stated, is the unwavering resolve to defend shared interests against destabilizing forces, with growing capabilities.
Lieutenant General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces and Commander of the South Zone, reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to the exercise, aiming to maintain readiness, strengthen partnerships, and foster a collective spirit to tackle regional challenges.
Berrid also noted the symbolic significance of the year 2027, marking the 250th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Morocco and the United States, with the next edition of African Lion reflecting the enduring friendship between the two countries.
General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of USAFRICOM, emphasized that African Lion is a premier joint exercise in Africa, signaling a formidable and unified commitment to a secure and prosperous Africa.
