Brussels: Belgium has declared its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative concerning the Sahara region, recognizing it within the framework of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and national unity. This announcement was formalized in a joint statement signed by Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, and Maxime Pr©vot, Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, following their meeting in Brussels.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Belgium acknowledges the Sahara issue as existentially significant to Morocco and considers the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco in 2007 as the most suitable, serious, credible, and realistic foundation for a political solution. Bourita expressed his approval of Belgium’s evolving stance, describing it as a clear recognition of the legitimate vision advocated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI for a permanent resolution to this regional dispute.
This endorsement from Belgium is part of a broader international support movement for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, which has already garnered support from numerous countries worldwide. The position reflects an increasing alignment towards a pragmatic approach focusing on dialogue, stability, and regional cooperation.
