Costa Rica Supports Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as Feasible Solution for Sahara

Rabat: The Republic of Costa Rica has officially recognized Morocco’s autonomy initiative as “the most appropriate, serious, credible, and realistic basis for reaching a political solution” to the ongoing regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. Costa Rica believes that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be the most feasible solution” for resolving the issue.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this stance was formalized in a Joint Declaration signed in Rabat, following discussions between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship, Arnoldo Andr© Tinoco, who is currently on a working visit to the Kingdom. Costa Rica has expressed its intention to support this position across political, diplomatic, economic, and consular domains.

Furthermore, Costa Rica welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, set for 2025. The resolution acknowledges Morocco’s commitment to the Sahara issue and the ongoing positive developments under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The Joint Declaration also reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to support the United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara and his efforts to advance the political process toward a definitive resolution.
