London: The UK government has reiterated its support for the Moroccan Sahara autonomy plan, as confirmed by Baroness Chapman of Darlington, the UK Minister for Development, during a debate at the House of Lords. This position underscores the UK’s commitment to finding a pragmatic solution to the long-standing conflict in the region.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Baroness Chapman emphasized the autonomy plan as the “right and pragmatic solution,” considering the conflict’s duration and the current geopolitical situation. She affirmed the UK’s close ties with Morocco, expressing hope that this approach would lead to peace and stability in the region.
Highlighting the UK’s stance, the minister remarked that the British government is acting with pragmatism and transparency, fulfilling its commitments to Morocco. This support aligns with a joint communiqué from last June, following a visit to Morocco by former Foreign Secretary David Lammy. The communiqué described the autonomy plan as “the most credi
ble, viable, and pragmatic basis” for a lasting resolution to the regional conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
