Morocco’s Top Senator Engages in Strategic Talks with European Parliament Delegation

Rabat: Morocco’s top senator recently engaged in strategic talks with a delegation from the European Parliament, led by co-chair Ruggero Razza, to emphasize the robust Moroccan-European Union (EU) ties. The discussions focused on the shared history, geographical proximity, and mutual interests that bind the two regions, as highlighted in a press release by the Upper House.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s commitment to enhancing Morocco’s material and human capital and pursuing comprehensive reforms across all regions of the country was a key point of discussion. Ould Errachid, during the talks, emphasized Morocco’s special status with the EU, granted in 2008, which extends beyond economic matters to include political, security, energy, and social areas.

The Upper House Speaker reiterated the EU’s position as Morocco’s leading trading partner, with trade between the two regions constituting a significant portion of Morocco’s foreign trade. This partnership aids in the gradual integration of the Moroccan economy into the European internal market.

On security and migration issues, both parties acknowledged the strategic importance of cooperation in counter-terrorism and combating organized crime and illegal immigration. The European delegation praised Morocco’s leadership under King Mohammed VI in managing migration flows and combating human trafficking, emphasizing the EU’s support for Morocco’s development and social programs aimed at addressing migration’s root causes and enhancing local development.

The discussions also explored future cooperation in energy and environmental transition. Both parties recognized Morocco’s pivotal role in advancing renewable energies, particularly solar and wind power. They also highlighted the Kingdom’s active involvement in the ‘Union for the Mediterranean’ initiatives and projects related to electricity interconnection and green energy, contributing to both partners’ carbon neutrality goals and supply security.
