Rabat: Morocco and Germany have entered into three significant financing agreements, collectively valued at £450 million, aimed at bolstering programs in climate, social protection, and mobility within the Casablanca-Settat region. The agreements allocate £100 million for climate initiatives, £150 million for social protection, and £200 million for the development of a mobility and logistics platform.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Climate Policy Support Program (Phase II) will focus on enhancing Morocco’s resilience to climate change and facilitating a transition to a low-carbon economy. The Social Protection Program (Phase II) is set to consolidate Morocco’s social protection project, emphasizing direct social assistance and employment promotion through active programs targeting NEETs.
The German Development Bank’s investment in the Casablanca-Settat mobility and logistics platform aims to modernize rail transport in the region by upgrading stations and enhancing rail infrastructure and services. Moroccan official Lekjaa highlighted the robust bilateral partnership between Morocco and Germany, noting that these agreements bring the total financial commitments between the nations to approximately £7 billion, alongside technical assistance estimated at £500 million.
Lekjaa emphasized the importance of these financings in supporting Morocco’s energy transition and climate change initiatives, recalling Morocco’s 2025 submission of its nationally determined contribution, which underscores its dedication to these efforts. He also pointed out that the project will transform spatial planning, aiding access and settlement in this economically strategic region.
Beckmann, representing the German Development Bank, expressed pride in supporting Morocco’s sustainable and inclusive development projects. She noted the commitment to doubling financing volumes in Morocco, with over £600 million allocated this year alone. Beckmann commended the collaboration between Moroccan and German teams, highlighting the significance of joint efforts in sustainable mobility and regional development.
The ceremony was attended by various Moroccan ministers, including the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka; the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali; and the Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment and Skills, Younes Sekkouri, alongside officials from relevant national institutions.
