Morocco, Spain Hold Joint Meeting in Tangier Ahead of Operation Marhaba 2026

Tangier: The Moroccan-Spanish Joint Transit Commission met on Wednesday in Tangier, co-chaired by Khalid Zerouali, Wali and Director of Migration and Border Surveillance, and Virginia Barcones Sanz, Spain’s Secretary-General for Civil Protection and Emergencies at the Ministry of the Interior. The meeting highlighted that the Marhaba Operation reflects the High Solicitude with which His Majesty King Mohammed VI surrounds members of the Moroccan community living abroad, ensuring that this initiative is conducted under optimal conditions at all levels.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, discussions focused on the operational measures implemented by both sides to guarantee the smooth and successful execution of the 2026 Marhaba Operation, in which the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity plays a central coordinating role. In this context, the system in place brings together all sectoral interventions while incorporating additional measures to facilitate traffic flow, enhance safety and security, and strengthen communication efforts.

A coordinated transport plan has also been deployed, featuring a significantly increased daily capacity for passengers and vehicles, alongside substantial investment in the modernization of port and airport infrastructure. In parallel, Moroccan consular services in Spain will be fully mobilized, ensuring continuous assistance and daily service delivery, including weekends and public holidays.

On the Spanish side, the operational framework includes the reinforcement of port processing capacities, the deployment of additional security and port police personnel, and the establishment of coordination centers as well as rest and information areas for travelers. Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the meeting, Barcones Sanz underscored the High Solicitude of HM King Mohammed VI toward the Marhaba Operation, noting that this royal attention reflects both the strategic significance of this large-scale initiative and its deeply humanitarian dimension.
