Morocco’s Role Highlighted in UN Peacekeeping Operations During Official Visit


Rabat: Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita, received UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix on Monday in Rabat during his second official visit to Morocco. Discussions centered on Morocco’s significant involvement and contribution to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Kingdom of Morocco plays a substantial and exemplary role in UN peacekeeping, grounded in a Royal Strategic Vision that emphasizes its longstanding commitment to these operations since 1960. Morocco is currently ranked ninth among the largest troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping efforts and has been entrusted with chairing the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for the year 2026. Additionally, Morocco serves as the coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on Peacekeeping issues, reflecting the international community’s trust in Morocco’s capabilities in maintaining global peace and security.

x’s visit aligns with the ongoing reform initiatives spearheaded by the UN Secretary-General. These reforms are part of the ‘UN 80’ initiative aimed at simplifying and streamlining the UN Secretariat and include a comprehensive review of all peacekeeping operations. The objective is to enhance the international peace and security architecture by restoring the primacy of politics in conflict management.
