Rabat: Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, held talks on Friday in Rabat with Mali’s Minister of Energy and Water, Tiemoko Traor©, focusing on ways to strengthen bilateral relations in managing water-related challenges and benefiting from Morocco’s experience in this field.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the discussions centered on areas of common interest, such as training and capacity-building for Malian officials in Moroccan institutes, support for Mali in meteorology, and potential use of artificial cloud-seeding programs. Baraka outlined Morocco’s national water policy, emphasizing key components like the National Dam Program, “water highways,” non-conventional water resources mobilization, and water-saving initiatives.
Baraka highlighted the importance of the integrated management of water resources through Hydraulic Basin Agencies and the strategic plan extending to 2050. Traor© commended Moroccan expertise and expressed interest in the Moroccan model, particularly in early warning systems, real-time water-quality monitoring, and mobile water-treatment stations.
Traor© emphasized the strong interest in adopting similar strategies in Mali, highlighting the brotherly spirit of the meeting. The dialogue aimed to address current challenges and develop a strategic vision for sustainable access to water, ensuring the longevity of infrastructure and equipment related to water security.
Both ministers agreed on a new framework for bilateral cooperation, including a Moroccan technical mission to Mali and a reciprocal visit by a Malian delegation to Morocco. This collaboration aims to lay the foundation for a sustainable partnership to enhance water security in both countries.
This meeting underscored the fraternal relations between Morocco and Mali and Morocco’s solidarity with Mali in overcoming regional water challenges. It also proposed structured support for Mali’s water program through a new cooperation agreement with defined monitoring indicators.
