Rabat: Croatia’s Petra Marcinko emerged victorious at the 24th edition of the Princess Lalla Meryem Tennis Grand Prix, held at the Railway Club in Rabat. Marcinko secured the title after Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina was forced to retire in the final match, with Marcinko leading 6-2, 3-0.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Marcinko showcased remarkable performance throughout the tournament, earning her spot in the final by defeating Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, during the semi-finals. Anhelina Kalinina, on the other hand, reached the final by overcoming Hungary’s Panna Udvardy in two sets, 6-0, 6-3.
In a post-match press conference, Petra Marcinko expressed her joy over winning the Grand Prix, highlighting the tournament’s vibrant atmosphere and commendable hospitality. Despite the scoreline, she acknowledged the challenging contest posed by her Ukrainian opponent before her retirement.
Khalid Outaleb, the Director of the Princess Lalla Meryem Grand Prix, described the event’
s outcome as “very positive.” He emphasized the organizing committee’s success in fulfilling all WTA criteria and highlighted the introduction of Hawk-Eye technology as a significant advancement in tournament organization and officiating.
Outaleb also lauded Moroccan player Yasmine Kabbaj’s performance, suggesting that it promises a bright future for Moroccan women’s tennis. He emphasized that Moroccan tennis is experiencing positive momentum across both men’s and women’s categories.
The doubles title of this 24th edition was claimed by the duo Eudice Chong and Magali Kempen, who secured victory on Friday.
