Slovakia Backs Moroccan Autonomy Initiative for Moroccan Sahara as UN Solution Basis

Rabat: As part of the international momentum initiated under His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s impetus in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and its autonomy plan, Slovakia has officially acknowledged the Moroccan initiative as a basis for a definitive solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue under United Nations auspices. The initiative, which was presented to the UN Secretary General on April 11th, 2007, is seen as a significant step towards resolving the longstanding conflict.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this position was conveyed by Slovakia in a Joint Statement following a meeting in Rabat between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and his Slovak counterpart, Juraj Blan¡r, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs. The meeting underscored Slovakia’s support for Morocco’s efforts and its sovereignty over the Sahara region.

Furthermore, Slovakia expressed its appreciation for the Moroccan efforts deemed serious and credible in advancing the political process towards a resolution. The Joint Statement emphasized the importance of a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution, based on compromise and in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter. It also highlighted the necessity of adhering to all relevant Security Council resolutions, including resolution S/RES/2756 of October 31st, 2024.

With this newly strengthened position, Slovakia joins the growing international support for the Moroccan Sahara and the autonomy initiative, which has been widely recognized by the global community as a viable solution to the conflict.
