Managua: The Republic of Burundi has reiterated its support for the Moroccan Autonomy plan, deemed the “sole and only serious, credible, and realistic basis” for achieving a lasting political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara. This declaration was made before the members of the UN Committee of 24 (C-24) during a regional seminar held in Managua, Nicaragua.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Burundi’s delegation welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, describing it as a historic moment that establishes the Autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the primary framework for the political process. The delegation noted the growing international support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, which is backed by more than 130 states worldwide, and urged all involved parties-Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the “polisario”-to engage constructively within the UN process.
Burundi also commended Morocco for respecting the ceasefire and maintaining full cooperation with MINU
RSO, while condemning any actions that could threaten regional stability, specifically mentioning the attack on the city of Smara on May 5, 2026, as a threat to regional security and peace efforts.
The Burundian delegation highlighted the socio-economic progress in Morocco’s Southern Provinces, noting significant investments in infrastructure, human development, environmental protection, and cultural enhancement that have improved living conditions and strengthened human development indicators in the region.
Furthermore, the delegation praised the involvement of the Moroccan Sahara’s populations in political, economic, and social activities through democratic institutions and electoral processes. It also commended the regular participation of democratically elected representatives in regional proceedings and C-24 seminars.
On human rights, Burundi acknowledged Morocco’s efforts through the Regional Commissions of the National Human Rights Council in LaSyoune and Dakhla and its cooperation with relevant Uni
ted Nations mechanisms. It also expressed concerns about the humanitarian situation in the Tindouf camps, calling for transparency in humanitarian aid distribution and adherence to registration mechanisms for the populations in these camps.
