Marrakech: Morocco is among the European Union’s “most dynamic” African partners in research and innovation, stated EU ambassador to Morocco, Patricia Llombardt. The diplomat highlighted the Kingdom’s active commitment to these sectors during an interview with MAP at Gitex Africa 2025, noting the involvement of approximately 65 Moroccan institutions in related programs, including “Horizon Europe.”
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the ambassador elaborated on the cooperation between the EU and Morocco, mentioning collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education through the “Erasmus+” programs. These initiatives benefit Moroccan students and researchers in European institutions. Additionally, there is a partnership with the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administration Reform to support the digitization of administrative procedures.
The EU is committed to supporting Africa’s and Morocco’s ambitions in the digital sector by providing financial cooperation through grants and loans from the European Investment Bank, she noted.
Ms. Lombardt emphasized the ambitious “Medusa” submarine cable project, which aims to enhance the EU’s digital connectivity with North African research and education centers, particularly in Morocco.
She remarked on this significant period for the Europe-Africa relationship, which marks 25 years of partnership. It also highlights the multidimensional relationship with Morocco, a country aligned with the EU on energy and digital issues, she added.
In this context, she expressed the EU’s goal of launching a new pact for the Mediterranean to deepen the Euro-Mediterranean partnership and explore new areas of cooperation.
Approximately 100 European companies and startups are participating in Gitex Africa 2025, taking place in Marrakech from April 14-16 under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI.
