Gov’t Head Chairs 1st Board Meeting of Souss-Massa Regional Health Group

Agadir: Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch chaired on Monday in Agadir the first Board meeting of the Territorial Health Group (GST) of the Souss-Massa region, as part of the government’s efforts to accelerate the rollout of Territorial Health Groups in line with the High Royal Guidelines aimed at carrying out a comprehensive reform of the national health system.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the launch of the Souss-Massa GST follows the establishment of similar groupings in the regions of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima and Rabat-Sal©-K©nitra, reflecting the ongoing momentum towards a new regional health governance model based on managerial autonomy, efficiency, integration of healthcare levels and consideration of territorial specificities and citizens’ needs, a press release from the Head of Government office says.

During the meeting, the Board approved the GST’s 2026 budget and action plan, as well as its 2026-2027 roadmap, organizational structure and the standard statute governing healthcare professionals under the group. The effective launch of the GST is scheduled for August 2026.

At the onset of the meeting, Akhannouch hailed the progress achieved in implementing Territorial Health Groups, stressing that the project, carried out within the framework of the enlightened Royal Vision, lays the foundations for a new health governance model focused on improving healthcare quality, ensuring equitable access to services and strengthening coordination between health institutions at the regional level.

The meeting also highlighted the strategic importance of the Souss-Massa region within the national healthcare system, particularly in light of its sustained demographic and economic growth. Emphasis was placed on the central role of the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center in Agadir, operational since 2025 with a capacity of 867 beds, serving nearly three million people in the region and neighboring areas. The facility was presented as the first healthcare institution in Africa to use robotic surgery technology for minimally invasive operations with 3D precision.

It was further noted that reconstruction and upgrading works at the Hassan II Regional Hospital Center in Agadir, with a capacity of 450 beds, are expected to begin before the end of the year.
